Case Study: Magna — AGVs at a Tier 1 supplier's plant
The AGV project for Magna is one example of Myzer's work for global Tier 1 automotive suppliers. The Magna AGV implementation concerned one of the group's plants in the Czech Republic, where internal transport supports high-volume production of automotive components.
Context: a Tier 1 automotive supplier
Magna is one of the largest suppliers to the automotive industry in the world — from body structures to complete systems fitted at car manufacturers' plants. The group's plants work to the end customer's takt, which means that internal logistics has no right to be late: components must arrive at the lines exactly when they are needed.
The transport challenge
In a Tier 1 environment, a typical problem is repetitive runs between the warehouse, buffer zones and assembly lines — carried out by forklifts, which generate costs, traffic and the risk of collisions in narrow traffic aisles. Automating such loops is a natural first step in robotising transport.
The Myzer solution
For the Magna plant we prepared a transport concept based on AGV robots matched to the customer's existing layout and load carriers. The scope of the project included:
- an analysis of routes and drop-off points in the existing facility layout,
- selecting the robot type to suit the kind of load carriers and the required towing capacities,
- a concept for collision-free traffic in zones shared with pedestrians,
- a plan for phased commissioning without stopping production.
